I loved it, even though it started out a little slow. This is set several years after the end of Disneys’ Brave. You don’t have to have watched the movie to understand this book, though.
Merida has just returned from a journey across Scotland, and everything seems the same. One night, she ventures out into the woods, chasing a man who seems to shift between human and animal. This man is not a man at all, but a god. Feradach, the god of ruin. He only appears when someplace is in need of ruin. He and the Cailleach, the ancient entity of creation, keep the balance. Feradach roots out the things that have become stagnant, and the Cailleach brings new life to those places. Feradach informs Merida that her kingdom of DunBroch has grown stagnant and in need of change. Merida begs for some time; she knows she can change her family if she tries. The Cailleach gives her a year to change them all, or Feradach will raze DunBroch.
Over the course of a year, Merida embarks on three quests, and tries to change her family, but will it be enough? Can she save them? This is a great book, for sure.
