This was pretty good. I mean, I’ve read better, but still pretty good. Vampires can no longer feed on humans whenever they want a snack. Why? Because most of humanity is infected with a virus called CFaD, and it’s deadly to vampires. A vampire named Victor Castel created a synthetic blood substitute called Hema, but Hema is overly pricey, and not everyone can afford it. Kat Finn and her mom are some of those people who can’t afford it. Kat’s dad died from CFaD because he couldn’t get Hema, so he fed on a human. Kat and her mom are barely getting by, having to live off of half-spoiled Hema. Kat applied to an elite vampire high school called Harcote behind her mom’s back. She never expects to get in, but when she does, her entire tuition and all her clothes and food are mysteriously paid for. Then she ends up being roommates with the worst possible person—Taylor Sanger, her snarky ex-best friend.
Taylor is tired of stuffy Harcote and its views on anything other than straight, especially considering that she’s lesbian. Taylor has no idea why Kat stopped being friends with her, but she certainly doesn’t want to relive past drama. But Harcote has secrets—secrets that could be dangerous to everyone. Kat and Taylor must work together to find out these secrets. But the two girls might be falling for each other, and neither knows what to think of that.
