The Selection by Kiera Cass

I didn’t go into this expecting to like it a whole lot, but it turned out to be pretty good. It’s kind of light on the plot, but it’s a fun read. In Illéa, there are eight castes, with Ones being royalty, and Eights being homeless. America and her family are Fives. America is content in her life. She sings for richer families of Threes and sometimes Twos, and helps her family around the house. But then the letter comes. The letter asking any girl between the ages of sixteen and twenty to enter The Selection, a competition to determine Prince Maxon’s future wife and queen. Out of the thousands of girls who enter, only thirty five will be selected. America doesn’t want to enter, but her mom knows that the money that would come with being selected would help them immensely. The only thing America’s mother doesn’t know is that America has a secret boyfriend, whom she’s been with for two years. America is completely and totally in love with Aspen, and he with her. But America is finally convinced to enter, not at all expecting to be chosen. But she is, and she has to go to the palace to try to win the heart of a boy she doesn’t even like. But as America and the prince spend more time together, America finds herself falling for someone she never thought she would.
