This was just an okay book. Though, I did enjoy the second half better than the first.
The country of Ravka has long been at war, and long been divided by the Shadow Fold, a scar of darkness filled with horrifying monsters. Many people don’t survive the trip through it. Our main character, Alina, must travel through the Fold as a cartographer for the First Army. But they’re attacked by the creatures of darkness that inhabit the Fold. Desperate and scared, Alina unleashes a power she didn’t even know she had. She creates light and burns away the monsters. Once out of the Fold, Alina is taken away by the Darkling, a mysterious and dangerous man with the power to harness shadows, and the leader of the Grisha, the magical servants of Ravka. He believes Alina to be the legendary Sun Summoner, the Grisha that will destroy the fold for good. But while living in the opulence of the castle, Alina discovers that the court is a dangerous place, and the Darkling is not who he seems. Parts of this book were enjoyable, while others were decidedly not. I suggest giving it a try, because I know there are people who say this is practically the best young adult book ever, even if it wasn’t my favorite.
