I love it! Spark has made its way into my top-ten favorite books (and that’s saying a lot). In Alorria, dragon-like creatures called Storm Beasts keep the weather nice and sunny, with the help of their Guardians of course. There are five types of Storm Beasts: Sun Beasts; Rain Beasts; Wind Beasts; Snow Beasts; and Lightning Beasts. It is an honor to be given a Storm Beast egg, and quiet Mina longs for the day when her egg will hatch, but when it does, a Lightning Beast is born, a creature of chaos. Mina’s family is sure it’s a mistake, that maybe someone switched the baby beasts. Mina and the Lightning Beast, Pixit, have no idea how to make them see that they belong together. So when a letter arrives, Mina is excited to see that she’ll be going to Mytris Lightning School. Her parents are not. Mina meets Jyx, a bouncy, loud, soon-to-be Lightning Guardian. Even with the huge difference between Mina and Jyx, they become fast friends. But Mina wonders if she was ever even meant to be a Lightning Guardian. Pixit assures her that she is. When Mina gets lost during a storm, she finds out that the storms that Storm Guardians keep away are killing people outside Alorria, and powerful people wish to hide that. Mina doesn’t learn to be loud; she learns to be strong, just as she is. Happy reading!
