Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun by Tọlá Okogwu

I loved this awesome super hero book! It’s set in the near-future. Onyeka is used to people criticizing her hair. But one day when her and her best friend Cheyenne are swimming, Cheyenne almost drowns. But Onyeka’s hair saves her. Her hair. When Onyeka’s mom finds out about her hair, she packs everything up, and moves them back to Nigeria, Onyeka’s birthplace, in search of Onyeka’s father. Onyeka’s mom brings her to a school called the Academy of the Sun, AOS for short, a place where kids like Onyeka—kids with superpowers—can learn how to control their powers. But AOS is weirdly competitive. As Onyeka works out the mysteries of her super powered hair, and why her new roommate seemingly hates her, she makes friends, and discovers a dangerous secret.
