I was so excited for this book, I even bought it before reading it, which I very rarely do. I was slightly disappointed, as it was very repetitive, but overall I loved it and it was a great read. Years ago, a plague swept over Ilya, granting extraordinary powers to those strong enough to survive. Now, decades later, the king of Ilya has declared anyone without powers must be executed. Paedyn Gray has lived her whole live in fear that someone will discover that she has no magic talent. But she poses as a Psychic, and she’s able to read people thanks to years of training from her father. She lives on the streets in the slums, stealing to survive. But then she unwittingly saves the life of Prince Kai, who’s known and feared across the kingdom as the future Enforcer. It’s his job to execute the Ordinaries. The spark between Paedyn and Kai is undeniable. Then Paedyn is thrown into the Purging Trials, supposedly an honor bestowed upon her for saving Kai’s life. But the Trials are deadly, especially for someone without a power. Paedyn has to keep up the charade that she’s a Psychic, all while living in the palace, surviving the Trials, and trying not to fall for the prince who would kill her if he knew what she was. I really like this book, though it might not be best for everyone.
